Owen Johnson – 15 years old – Scouted by Weston-Super-Mare
At 15 years old, Owen Johnson has already experienced the highs and lows of youth football, navigating through academies, trials, and competitive county football. His journey has now taken a promising turn, with Owen being scouted by Weston-Super-Mare and earning a coveted place in their academy.

Owen’s footballing journey began with Plymouth Argyle’s Centre of Excellence, where he progressed through the Elite Hub and eventually secured a three-month trial at the academy. While he was released after that trial, the experience only fuelled his determination to succeed. Beyond club football, Owen has consistently showcased his abilities on the pitch. Representing Cornwall and captaining his school’s county-winning side for the last three years has honed his leadership skills and reinforced his reputation as a reliable and talented left centre midfielder.

When Owen attended UK Football Trials, his sights were firmly set on proving himself. “Word of mouth from friends and coaches brought me here,” he explained. The event provided him with the platform to showcase his skills in front of scouts and gain valuable experience in trial settings.

The trial was a defining moment for Owen. His ability to perform under pressure caught the attention of scouts, who approached him during the session to ask for his name and details. Reflecting on this, Owen said, “That was the best moment for me—knowing that someone saw my potential and wanted to know more about me.”

Once informed that he had been scouted by Weston-Super-Mare, the process moved quickly. Owen was contacted via email to arrange a trial with the club. He spent three intensive days training with the under-16, under-18, and under-19 squads, immersing himself in the club’s setup. His dedication and performance during these sessions were rewarded with an offer to join the academy. Alongside this, Owen was invited to enrol in Weston-Super-Mare’s education pathway, combining football development with academic studies—a perfect blend for a player looking to build a future both on and off the pitch.

The UK Football Trials experience taught Owen invaluable lessons about preparing for trials and making an impact in a short amount of time. He emphasised the importance of being ready, both mentally and physically, and showcasing his best attributes whenever the opportunity arose.

When asked if he would recommend UK Football Trials, Owen’s answer was clear: “Yes. You know the level you can play at, so go and show it off.” For him, the trials were not just about being seen by scouts but also about gaining confidence and understanding what it takes to succeed in competitive environments.

With his place at Weston-Super-Mare Academy secured, Owen’s next steps are focused on making the most of this opportunity. The club’s staff have already provided guidance, and he is eager to begin his journey with the academy’s 16-18 team.

Owen Johnson’s story is one of resilience and perseverance. From Plymouth Argyle to county football and now to Weston-Super-Mare, he is proving that hard work and self-belief can open doors. As he prepares to take his next steps in football, Owen is an inspiring example for other young players aiming to follow their dreams.
