Monty Castle: 14 Year Old Trial for Burton Albion

Monty Castle: 14 Year Old Trial for Burton Albion
For 14-year-old Monty Castle, the road to a professional football environment hasn’t been easy — but his journey is proof that perseverance and the right platform can bring opportunities back around. After being scouted and narrowly missing out at both Walsall and Burton Albion in the past, Monty never gave up. Instead, he used the experience as fuel, returned to UK Football Trials, and has now found himself back at Burton Albion, this time with a real shot.

“I’ve played football for as long as I can remember,” Monty explained. “Centre back has always been my position — I love reading the game, winning challenges, and being a leader on the pitch. I’ve had a few near misses with clubs before, including Walsall and Burton, which were tough moments, but I knew I couldn’t let that be the end.”

Determined to keep pushing forward, Monty attended UK Football Trials, hoping to reignite his path into academy football. He impressed on the day with his composure at the back, solid communication, and ability to play out from defence. Scouts from multiple clubs were present — including familiar faces from Burton Albion — and once again, Monty caught their eye.

“When I found out I’d been scouted again by Burton, it felt like redemption,” said Monty. “But this time, I came back stronger. I’ve matured as a player, I’ve worked on my weaknesses, and I was ready to show them what I can do.”

Following the trial, Monty was invited back to Burton Albion, where he is currently training and playing matches with the team.

I’m still on trial right now, and things are going really well. I’ve had the chance to train regularly and play against other academy sides — it’s been a massive step up, but one I feel ready for.”

Reflecting on his UK Football Trials experience, Monty is clear about the impact it had on his development.

“The biggest thing I learned is to keep chasing the dream, no matter how many setbacks you have. The trials were a great experience — playing against strong players, learning from the coaches, and just getting that academy-level exposure helped me massively.”

His favourite moment from the trial?

“Definitely the matches. Playing against academy players pushed me, but I also felt confident in how I defended. It gave me belief that I do belong at this level.”

When asked what brought him to UK Football Trials in the first place, Monty shared that it was a family decision — and one that paid off.

“My brother actually did it before me, and I’d seen the trials advertised online. It looked like a great way to get into the academy system — and now I know for sure it is.”

Would he recommend it?

“100%. If you’ve got the hunger and want to test yourself in front of scouts, there’s no better place. UK Football Trials gave me the opportunity I needed to get back in front of a pro club, and I’m making the most of it.”

As Monty continues his trial at Burton Albion, one thing is certain — he’s not just playing for a place, he’s playing for the dream he never gave up on.
