Calistus Fernando: 17 Year Old Trial for Potters Bar Town

At just 17 years old, Calistus Fernando has already proved that persistence, self-belief, and taking the right opportunities can open doors to the next level of football. From local school teams and grassroots matches to stepping into the ranks at Potters Bar Town FC, his journey highlights exactly what UK Football Trials is all about — creating a real pathway for talent to shine.
Calistus began playing football at the age of nine. A naturally athletic and focused individual, he found his home between the posts early on, representing Our Lady of Immaculate Primary School, Southborough Secondary School, and Corinthians FC in his local community. It was there that he developed a strong foundation in teamwork, leadership, and technical goalkeeper skills.
“Throughout the years, I’ve worked hard to improve every part of my game — my handling, decision-making, and most importantly, my mentality,” said Calistus. “I knew I had what it takes, I just needed the right chance to show it.”
That chance came when Calistus attended a UK Football Trials event. From the moment he arrived, he took the experience seriously, soaking up every bit of advice from the coaches and delivering a strong performance in front of over 20 scouts.
“I was really impressed by the structure of the UK Football Trials,” he said. “The training sessions, the matches, the pressure — it felt like a proper academy setup. It gave me a platform to showcase my shot-stopping, distribution and decision-making under pressure.”
Shortly after the trial, Calistus received the news that every young footballer dreams of — he’d been scouted. Potters Bar Town FC, a well-respected non-league club known for developing young players, invited him to join their summer identification camp for the men’s squad.
“When I got the call, I was honestly buzzing,” Calistus said. “I knew it was just the beginning, but it gave me so much confidence. I told myself this is the moment to push even harder.”
He arrived at the trial ready. The intensity was high, but thanks to his UK Football Trials experience, he felt prepared. “We started with catching drills and dives, just like at the trials. Then on Friday we moved into match scenarios. I made a 1v1 save and even pulled off a foot save over the bar — that felt amazing.”
One moment stood out in particular: calmly passing out from the back under pressure without panicking. “That composure — I owe a lot of it to the drills and environment at UK Football Trials. They helped me feel like I belonged at this level.”
When asked if he would recommend UK Football Trials to other aspiring players, Calistus didn’t hesitate:
“Absolutely. If you want to be seen by professionals, this is the best place. It gives you real exposure and teaches you to train and think like an academy player. The coaches push you to be your best — I felt like I left there a better goalkeeper.”
Now officially part of the squad at Potters Bar Town FC, Calistus remains focused and humble. The feedback from the club? “Keep going. There’s always a way forward.” And for Calistus, the path forward is clear — continue training hard, grab every opportunity, and keep proving what he can do.
