Shea’s football story began early. From the age of nine, he was already training within academy systems, developing the fundamental skills that would form the foundation of his career. Over seven years in these environments, he learned the technical demands of being a goalkeeper while also understanding the level of discipline and professionalism expected from young players trying to make their mark. 

At 16, Shea earned a scholarship with Salford City, which allowed him to continue his football development alongside his education. The scholarship programme was a critical step, giving him daily training, exposure to highly qualified coaches, and the experience of competitive matches against tough opposition. These years were essential in shaping his mental approach to the game, teaching him the importance of focus, communication, and staying composed under pressure. 

His performances earned him a professional contract at Hull City—a significant milestone for any young player. That one-year pro deal allowed Shea to experience life at a professional club, training with high-level teammates and learning from experienced goalkeeping coaches. Even though he was ultimately released at the end of his contract, it was an invaluable year for personal growth and preparation for the next challenge. 

After his release, Shea wasn’t ready to give up on his ambitions. He knew that, as a goalkeeper in particular, career paths can be unpredictable, and opportunities can come from showing determination and staying in the shop window. That’s what led him to UK Football Trials—a chance to get in front of scouts from multiple clubs in one place, all looking for players to strengthen their squads. 

Shea chose UK Football Trials very deliberately. “I knew many scouts would be there in one place, giving me more of a chance to be spotted,” he said. And the decision paid off. Once the event ended, he received emails from clubs interested in him, alongside phone conversations with scouts and club representatives who were keen to know more. 

Reflecting on the trial itself, Shea says the best part was being approached by scouts during and after the sessions. “It made me feel I was doing very good in the sessions I attended,” he explained. The positive engagement from professionals confirmed that he’d performed at a level that caught the right kind of attention. 

He also highlighted what he learned from the experience: “To be yourself and don’t let the pressure of any scouts affect your performance.” That lesson is vital for any trial environment. With so many players wanting to impress, it’s easy to let nerves undermine performance. Shea’s ability to stay calm and play his natural game was part of what helped him stand out. 

Currently, Shea is awaiting confirmation of the date for his upcoming trial with Sheffield Wednesday—an opportunity he is determined to make the most of. The club has expressed genuine interest, and final details are being worked out. He expects to hear confirmation this coming Monday. In the meantime, he’s staying focused, training hard, and preparing both physically and mentally for the chance to earn a spot with a respected professional club. 

Beyond Sheffield Wednesday, Shea has also received interest and feedback from several other clubs, including Altrincham, Northwich Victoria, Alsager Town, and Oxford City. This wider interest is a testament to both his ability and his approach—demonstrating that there are multiple pathways still open to him as he continues his career. 

When asked if he would recommend UK Football Trials to other players, Shea doesn’t hesitate: “It gives you a massive chance to be scouted, as you know the scouts will be at the event.” His own experience of securing multiple contacts and trial opportunities is exactly the kind of outcome players hope for when they sign up.
