Southern League Premier South side Farnborough Town have offered 16-year-old Sam Bosworth a contract at the academy.
Sam, who attended our trial at QPR’s training ground in April, put in an impressive display during the match and was almost immediately invited for a trial with Farnborough by coach Mark Wardley.
Tracey, his mum, explained: “Mark was fantastic. Two days after UK Football Trials he went in and played with the academy boys and got superb feedback – Mark offered him a place at the academy straight away.
“We were all thrilled with the offer.”
The news may come as a surprise to those who know Sam, given that he has just finished only his third season as an outfield player.
Sam spent three months at Wolves – who were in the Premier League at the time – before their relegation to the Championship, which led them to cut players from their academy.
From there, he had goalkeeper trials with Derby and also attended a UK Football Trial event in between the posts.
“In the end he wasn’t enjoying it in goal and decided to become an outfield player,” said Tracey.
“He is getting bigger and stronger and is growing in confidence.”
After making the choice to change positions, Sam was faced with another big decision this summer.
Around the same time Farnborough made him an offer, so too did the Pro Direct Academy.
Tracey revealed: “He went for a trial at Pro Direct and was left with a really hard decision to make.”
Sam will be joining with the Pro Direct Academy in September, but also attended another one of our trials – this time in Manchester – last month.
“UK Football Trials was fabulous,” added Tracey.
“It was an opportunity to see how he has progressed and he actually watched the game back and was disappointed with his performance, even though he got scouted!”
We would like to congratulate Sam on the offer of a contract from Farnborough and wish him well for the start of his new journey in September.
