Edward Hewitson - Aged 14 - Goalkeeper Trial with Cheltenham Town
Goalkeeper Edward Hewitson is set to join Cheltenham Town's Academy for pre-season training after he was scouted at our event in Birmingham in May.
Edward, 14, has attended two UK Football Trials in the past and it was third time lucky for this Goalkeeper as he caught the eye of several scouts last month.
Representatives from Coventry City, Birmingham City and the Professional Football Scouts Association all expressed an interest in Edward, but with location proving to be an issue for the former Newport County 'keeper, who is based in Wales, a trial with League 2 side Cheltenham made sense.
The 5ft 7' player, who had trials at Cardiff City two years ago, will join last seasons National League Champions' u15 side for a trial in the coming weeks.
Speaking about his son's reaction to the news, Edward's Dad, Rob, said: "Obviously he's really excited about it and looking forward to it.
"He knows he's just got to grab every opportunity that he can at the moment and make the most of it. He's had a few opportunities over the last couple of years and the right one will come along."
Edward fell just short of the standards required for a professional academy when he attended UK Football Trial events in the past, but Rob revealed how the youngster stayed positive and used it to his advantage.
"We've ben to three UK Football Trials now and it's a good experience, he's enjoyed the trials and has got to experience football all around the UK - it's been a great opportunity to get himself in the shop window," said Rob.
"The reason we came back was because you can't be put off just because he hasn't been picked up at the first trial."
He added: "One persons idea of a good goalkeeper can be different to anothers and you're not always going to play well.
"It's been a frustrating couple of years but a lot has happended recently and that's because of UK Football Trials and how he performed on the day.
"Sometimes in these environments it's the minor things that catch the eye of the people watching and you have to put yourself in that situation where you're being watched as often as you can."
We wish Edward good luck on his trial with Cheltenham in the coming weeks, and his progress will also continue to be monitored by Coventry City.
