George Britton - Aged 17 - Trial for West Bromwich Albion
17-year-old winger George Britton has trialled with Championship club West Bromwich Albion after being scouted by the side whilst attending his fourth UK Football Trials event!
When talking to George, he told us about his footballing journey so far, explaining: “As a youngster; around 13 or 14-years-old I trialled for Portsmouth and Brighton but I didn’t really get anywhere with either club.”
“After this I decided to play locally which then lead to me trialling for Aldershot whom I’m still playing for now.”
“I then attended some UK Football Trial events and had interest from various clubs and that’s pretty much the journey up to this point.” He added.
Despite having opportunities at a younger age, and playing for Aldershot, George still opted to attend our one-day trials. Curious as to why, he explained: “The reason I came to your event was because it seemed like the ideal opportunity to play in front of high level scouts from different leagues. It was definitely a no brainer when I saw it.”
He continued to say: “I’ve been to four of your events in total over the past year and a half and in this time I’ve been scouted by Sheffield Wednesday, Rochdale, Aston Villa and West Brom.”
Unfortunately previous opportunities didn’t plan out the way George wanted and he faced setbacks. He explained: “With Sheffield Wednesday, the head of recruitment had another player lined up for my position and the opportunity was no longer available.”
“Then, the scout who selected me for Rochdale was no longer with the club once I was put in contact, so that meant that chance was gone too. This was quite unlucky but it’s just the way it is in football sometimes.”
Despite these setbacks, George continued to display the perfect attitude and continued to work hard and attend a further trial.
He explained: “With my most recent trial, both Aston Villa and West Brom contacted me explaining their interest.”
He continued to explain what happened after this, telling us: “I was invited to trial with West Brom for two weeks and I was also offered to play in a game.”
“A day in the life of a West Brom player started off with breakfast together in the morning, we’d then go into training which was followed by lunch which was eaten together again as a team. From there we’d have different sessions such as gym work or something like that.”
“When it came to playing in a match for West Brom, I was lucky enough to get on the score sheet and get an assist. It really was an amazing experience.” He added.
We asked George what his thought were on the level and if there was an outcome from his time with the Championship side. He told us: “The level was really high compared to what I have experienced previously.”
“As a player you see whether you can adapt to this and that’s how you find out if you’re at the level needed.”
“About a week after my trial, I had a really nice conversation with the Head of Recruitment. He said how I displayed myself during my time on trial was amazing, but unfortunately at this moment in time they couldn’t offer me a place.”
“My advice to other players would be that you’re playing for yourself. If you want to make it, you need to go into it with the correct attitude and be adaptable. You have all these scouts who are there watching, you just need to go into it full steam. Play like it’s the last time you’ll ever get an opportunity.”
Everyone at UK Football Trials would like to wish George the best of luck with his football in the future. He has displayed a brilliant attitude and is clearly a very talented player. We hope he can continue to improve and find the right opportunity.
