13-year-old central midfielder Callum Gosney signed for Fleetwood Town after being scouted from our trial in Manchester back in December 2019.
Speaking with Callum, we asked him why he chose to attend our event. He explained: “I chose to attend your event because I wanted to experience the trials and see if I could compete at a level that may interest attending scouts.”
He continued: “The trial was brilliant and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was exciting to be amongst other talented players and to be coached by such highly regarded coaches in football.”
“The UKFT team were really encouraging and easy to get along with making sure I was comfortable and relaxed enough to enjoy the day.”
Moving onto the interest expressed by Fleetwood Town and his eventual signing, Callum told us: “When I found out the club were interested I was really excited that I could attract attention amongst many other talented players on the day. I have worked hard in training for my previous clubs so it felt really rewarding. Covid delayed the progress of my trial but I was ready and waiting for my chance to impress.”
“Then I was told they wanted to sign me and I was over the moon. The club and coaching team are fantastic. Scott (Head of Recruitment) and my coach Mark Yeates who has played at the highest level for both club and country praised me for the effort I put in to the trial, which was really pleasing to hear.”
Callum then moved on to tell us what life is like at Fleetwood, he explained: “It’s brilliant! The coaching team and my teammates have made me feel welcome from day one. The level is very competitive and the team have equal abilities and play at a fast pace.”
“We train Monday, Wednesday and Friday with games on Sundays. Training covers fitness and technical drills. We will be doing gym work in the near future to improve on our fitness, agility and strength.”
As well as the high level of players and training, Callum was also impressed with the facilities at his new club and told us: “Before joining Fleetwood I was fortunate to play friendlies at a good number of professional academies whilst playing for Cumbria Academy in the Junior Premier League and with the North West JPL Representative team.”
“Fleetwood is right up there with the best. The facilities are new; purpose built and well cared for with future new developments planned. The club is going places and have high expectations.”
Finally we asked Callum what advice he had for other players who were looking to be scouted. He said: “Attend UK Football Trials and keep attending until it pays off. I was fortunate to be scouted at my second attempt but was willing to keep coming even if it was to just be recognised by the scouts.”
UK Football Trials are delighted for Callum and would like to congratulate him on his signing with Fleetwood. Covid delayed his trial but he remained professional and worked his very hardest when he needed to and that hard work paid off.
We will continue to bring updates regarding Callum’s progress as it comes in.
