Finley Blackwell - Aged 14 – Goalkeeper's Trial at Rotherham
Finley’s journey with UK Football Trials began when he attended one of their events and caught the eye of scouts. Within a few days of being notified by UK Football Trials that he had been scouted, Finley was contacted by the Head of Recruitment at Rotherham United and invited to participate in an 8-week trial. The trial began in late February 2024, and Finley was excited to receive his football kit and start this new chapter.
During his trial with Rotherham United, Finley trained three nights a week. His training regimen included small-sided games against other local academies, 11v11 matches on Sundays, specialized goalkeeper training, and sessions with the wider U14, U15, and U16 teams. Finley found the club to be incredibly welcoming, and the friendly environment and excellent coaching helped him settle in quickly. "The club was very welcoming and created a friendly environment with great coaching," Finley shared.
Finley’s trial was structured with reviews to track his progress. After four weeks, he received a review that highlighted some areas to work on, which he took on board. At his 8-week review, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and Finley was invited back for another 8-week trial starting in August 2024. Reflecting on his experience, Finley said, “I have learned a lot of different aspects to my game and goalkeeping at Rotherham, which has really helped me to improve as a footballer. I feel that I am a better goalkeeper now than when I first started the trial in February 2024.”
When asked about the level and ability of the players at the trial, Finley mentioned that the standards were as high as he expected. "I am of the opinion that the level and ability of players at the trial was what I was expecting, with very high standards and good quality of players," he remarked.
Finley’s decision to attend UK Football Trials was influenced by the positive reviews and the opportunities the trials provide for players to showcase their talents at academies. He was also drawn to the venues, such as playing at Tamworth Stadium. “Previous reviews of the trials and opportunities they offer to attend at academies were key reasons for attending,” Finley explained.
When asked if he would recommend UK Football Trials to other aspiring players, Finley’s response was enthusiastic: “Yes—definitely, because it is a great experience.” His journey with Rotherham United is far from over, as he has been invited back for a further 8 weeks of trial in August 2024. The club has provided him with very positive feedback, and since he joined close to the end of the season, they want to give him more opportunities to play in matches.
Finley’s story is a testament to his hard work and perseverance. We wish him the best of luck as he continues his journey with Rotherham United, and we look forward to seeing him develop even further!
