Timofey Kristian Abenoja: 19 years old - From Russia to the Philippines National Youth Team
Born to a Filipino father and a Russian mother, Timofey was exposed to a diverse cultural background, which shaped his outlook on life and football. He quickly developed into a versatile defender, capable of playing on both the right and left sides of the pitch. His tactical awareness, ball-handling skills, and defensive mindset allowed him to thrive in various roles, including right-back, left-back, wing-back, and even central defender.
In 2024, Timofey’s football career took an exciting turn when he attended UK Football Trials while living in England. The trials provided him with a platform to showcase his abilities in front of scouts from various clubs. During his time at the trials, Timofey trained with FC Bromyard Town First Team and Coventry FC Rangers First Team, gaining valuable experience and impressing scouts with his performance. One of the most notable outcomes of the trial was an invitation to join Buckinghamshire FC United First Team for the 2024/2025 season.
However, the biggest highlight of Timofey’s career came when he was called up by the Philippines Football Federation (PFF) to join the Philippines National Youth Team U20 for the AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers. “This is a dream come true for me,” Timofey shared. “I became the very first Filipino-Russian to wear the national colours and represent the Philippines on the international stage.”
Timofey’s call-up was a direct result of the exposure he gained through UK Football Trials. “The YouTube video links from the trials were seen by the coaching staff and selection team at the Philippines Football Federation,” Timofey explained. His dream of representing his country in international football was now a reality.
Before heading to the Philippines for the AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers, Timofey played for Buckinghamshire FC United in a warm-up game, starting as a left-back. “I played their warm-up game before flying to the Philippines. It was a great experience, and it helped me prepare for the qualifiers,” Timofey said.
Upon arriving in the Philippines, Timofey joined the national team camp in September 2024, where he trained intensely to prepare for the tournament. The qualifiers saw the Philippines placed in Group H, alongside tough opponents such as Thailand (the host nation), Iraq, and Brunei Darussalam. “Competing on this stage is something I’ve always dreamed of,” Timofey reflected. “It was an incredible experience to play against some of the best young players in Asia.”
Timofey’s success didn’t stop there. His impressive performances during the trials and his time with the national team have opened even more doors for him. “I’ve been in contact with the Chairman of Buckinghamshire FC United to discuss my next steps with the club,” Timofey explained. He remains focused on continuing his football journey both in the UK and internationally, with his sights set on the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, where he hopes to represent the Philippines once again.
Looking back on his journey, Timofey credits UK Football Trials for giving him the opportunity to achieve his dreams. “Without these trials, I wouldn’t have achieved my dream of playing for the Philippines National Youth Team or being scouted by Buckinghamshire FC United,” he said. His experience at the trials was invaluable, and he is grateful to Chad, Terry, and the entire UK Football Trials team for their support and guidance.
As Timofey continues to chase his dreams, he is determined to keep improving and growing as a player. His story is an inspiring example of how hard work, dedication, and the right opportunities can lead to extraordinary achievements.
We congratulate Timofey on all he has accomplished so far, and we are excited to see what the future holds for him, both in the UK and on the international stage.
