Charlie Slade - 15-Year-Old Left Back - Trial with Oxford
This season, Charlie was set to play for Chalfont St Peter Under 18s, but he put those plans on hold when he received an exciting opportunity to trial with Oxford United. In addition to his football commitments, Charlie has a provisional place at JMA Reading for Sixth Form, but he is waiting to see how his trial with Oxford goes before making any final decisions.
After attending a UK Football Trials event, Charlie received an email from Oxford United the very same day, offering him an 8-week trial. It was a pivotal moment in his journey. “Once UK Football Trials told me I was scouted, I received an email from Oxford United the same day offering me an 8-week trial,” Charlie recalled, still amazed at how quickly things progressed.
Charlie is now in the second week of his trial with Oxford United, training with the team three times a week. He has already had the chance to play in a match against Sutton United, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Reflecting on his performance, Charlie said, “I was invited to play in a game against Sutton. We drew 2-2 and the coach said I played well.” The early positive feedback from the coaching staff is a great sign for Charlie as he continues to adapt to the higher level of play.
The experience of being on trial with a professional club like Oxford United has been transformative for Charlie. “I am learning so much. The level is a huge step up, but I’m loving it. Every player lives for football and the team are really friendly and give lots of advice,” he shared. The intensity and dedication required at this level are evident, and Charlie is embracing the challenge. “The coaches quickly pick up on your weaknesses and show you how to improve,” he added, highlighting the supportive and developmental environment at the club.
The level of competition and ability of the players at Oxford United was exactly what Charlie expected, and he has thrived in this high-pressure environment. “It was the best week of football I’ve ever had,” he said, clearly enjoying every moment.
Charlie’s decision to attend UK Football Trials was motivated by a desire to truly showcase his abilities. “I did a half-day training event which I enjoyed, but I didn’t feel I was able to show who I was properly as a footballer in the short time of the trial. My parents said I should do the week, and even though I wasn’t sure at the time, it was the best thing I did,” he explained. The extended format of the week-long trial allowed Charlie to demonstrate his full range of skills and leave a lasting impression on the scouts.
When asked if he would recommend UK Football Trials to other aspiring footballers, Charlie was enthusiastic in his response: “Definitely worth it. There is great coaching, talks, advice, and you also meet up with lots of like-minded kids who love football, just like you.” The experience not only provided him with a platform to showcase his talent but also offered invaluable guidance and support.
As Charlie continues his 8-week trial, he remains focused and determined to make the most of this opportunity. “My trial is for 8 weeks. I’m getting great coaching and feedback, so hopefully it will be a positive ending,” he said with optimism. Last weekend, he had the honour of playing his first game for Oxford United, marking another milestone in his journey.
We congratulate Charlie on his achievements so far and wish him the very best as he continues his trial with Oxford United. His dedication, hard work, and passion for the game are evident, and we’re excited to see where his football journey will take him next. Good luck, Charlie!
