Harry Fitzgerald (Age 12) – Scouted by Charlton Athletic
At just 12 years old, Harry Fitzgerald has already made a brave and successful transition in his football journey — switching from playing outfield to becoming a full-time goalkeeper, a decision that’s now paying off in the best way possible. After impressing at a UK Football Trials event, Harry was scouted by Charlton Athletic, where he now trains at their Advanced Development Centre.

“I originally played out on the pitch,” Harry explained, “but I always enjoyed the occasional game in goal. A few years ago, I decided to become a full-time goalkeeper — and I’ve loved every second of it.”

That passion and dedication caught the eye of academy scouts at his trial, particularly those from Charlton, who quickly got in touch after the event. For Harry, it was a surreal moment, but also a sign that his hard work and commitment were being recognised.

“Once UK Football Trials told me I’d been scouted, I was contacted by the lead scout from Charlton and invited to train at their Advanced Development Centre.”

From there, things moved quickly. Harry attended his first session and was given a huge opportunity — a chance to play a match against the Charlton Academy team. For any young footballer, that would be a big moment. For a 12-year-old still new to full-time goalkeeping, it was an experience that will never be forgotten.

“Playing against the academy team was an amazing experience. It really tested me and gave me a taste of what that level is like.”

He continues to be assessed at the development centre and has already received positive feedback after his first session, with an invitation to continue training the following week. This ongoing opportunity gives Harry the platform to continue developing his skills in a high-performance environment — and he’s making the most of it.

Reflecting on his time at UK Football Trials, Harry shared how much the experience helped shape his mindset.

“The biggest lesson for me was to just keep working hard and never give up. The trial reminded me to always keep pushing forward to improve.”

His favourite part of the day? Training with other goalkeepers and learning from the coaches, who he says made a real difference.

“It’s more than a trial — it’s a learning experience. The coaches were brilliant and the feedback I received was really helpful.”

Would he recommend UK Football Trials to others? Without hesitation.

“Not only does it help you improve your game with great feedback on the day, but you also get to meet other amazing players. And, of course, there’s the experience of playing in front of academy scouts — it’s exciting and motivating.”

Harry’s story is one of transition, determination, and passion. From his first days between the posts to playing against academy players, he’s already come so far — and this is just the beginning. With continued support and guidance at Charlton’s Advanced Development Centre, the young keeper’s future looks bright.
