Iona Brenchley (Age 12) – Midfielder Scouted by Oxford United

Iona Brenchley’s football story is one of passion, perseverance, and progression. At just 12 years old, she has already carved out a reputation as a determined and technically gifted midfielder — and her journey is only just beginning.
Iona’s love for the game began at Abingdon, where she first laced up her boots and fell in love with football. From there, she moved to Oxford City, starting out in the C League. Through consistent hard work and commitment, she rapidly improved and finished this season playing in the A League, where her team placed fourth overall.
“It’s not just about matches for Iona,” her family shared. “She trains constantly, plays in multiple teams, and gives everything she has.”
Alongside Oxford City, she plays in the boys’ league with Didcot, holding her own in a physically tougher environment — something that’s not only built her resilience but helped develop her technical sharpness and tactical understanding.
And it doesn’t stop there. Iona also takes part in two one-to-one coaching sessions every week, focusing on fitness, skill development, and game intelligence. Her dedication is clear to anyone who watches her play.
“Whether it’s a match, training, or even just having a kickabout in the garden — she lives and breathes football.”
When Iona attended UK Football Trials, her ambition was simple: to test herself in a new environment and learn from professionals. The trial proved to be a turning point.
“She had to be adaptable and hold her own alongside a strong group of players,” her parent said. “It really pushed her out of her comfort zone — but in the best way.”
After the trial, Iona received a detailed scout report filled with praise and helpful feedback. It was here that she learned she’d been scouted by Oxford United, with the scout shadowing her for a week and selecting her for a follow-up trial.
“It gave her a huge confidence boost. She was so proud — but also even more focused on working hard and chasing her dream.”
Iona’s Oxford United trial takes place on 29th May, and she’s also preparing for upcoming JPL (Junior Premier League) trials.
Of all the moments in the UK Football Trial, one stands out to Iona — winning the plank challenge.
“She was so proud of herself. It meant a lot — she still talks about it now. It really boosted her belief.”
When asked what she learned from the trial, the response was clear.
“She learned so much — about the game, about feedback, and about herself. She came away stronger, more confident, and more motivated than ever.”
The experience of UK Football Trials was exactly what Iona and her family had hoped for — and more.
“We wanted her to grow in confidence and gain honest feedback. She got all of that — plus encouragement, challenge, and a fantastic trial opportunity.”
Would they recommend UK Football Trials to others?
“100% yes. The coaching was outstanding, the feedback was constructive, and the environment was incredibly supportive. Iona felt seen, encouraged, and inspired. If your child loves football and wants to grow, this is where they need to be.”
As she prepares for her Oxford United trial, Iona stands ready — confident, determined, and excited for what’s to come.
