Riley Stevens – 14 Years Old – Scouted by Oxford United, AFC Wimbledon, Brentford, Bromley & Norwich
At just 14 years old, goalkeeper Riley Stevens has already shown that hard work, dedication, and the right opportunities can open doors to some of the biggest names in English football. His journey so far has seen him develop both at grassroots and academy level, and his recent performances at a UK Football Trials event have now earned him serious attention from multiple professional clubs — including Oxford United, AFC Wimbledon, Brentford, Bromley, and Norwich City.
Riley currently plays his grassroots football for Marlow United while also attending the highly regarded FAB Academy at Bisham Abbey, where he works hard to refine his skills and improve his all-round game. Balancing both environments has been a key part of his development, allowing him to benefit from structured academy-style coaching alongside the competitive experience of grassroots football.
When Riley attended UK Football Trials, his aim was clear: to showcase his ability and prove he had what it takes to play at a higher level. The event quickly delivered on its promise. “I received several emails from all clubs except Brentford asking for further information,” Riley explained. Among them, one stood out in particular — Oxford United came back offering a trial.
That moment was a turning point for Riley, providing a huge boost of confidence. His trial is due to start towards the end of August, and while he is still awaiting final details on the exact length and structure, the opportunity itself is one he is determined to grasp.
Looking back on what he gained from attending UK Football Trials, Riley highlighted the value of the platform. “It showed me that there is still opportunity for players that haven’t yet been picked up or may have never been in the system,” he said. “It’s a great way to showcase myself in front of several scouts all at the same time, especially living in an area that isn’t necessarily in the catchment area of a lot of scouts.”
One of the standout moments for Riley came from being the only goalkeeper in the 14–16 age group at the trial. This unique situation meant he benefited from one-to-one coaching and detailed feedback, while also being asked to step up and play in both his own age group and with older players in the match scenarios at the end of the event. This extra exposure allowed him to show his composure, confidence, and technical ability across different situations — an experience he described as invaluable.
Riley’s decision to attend UK Football Trials was also influenced by others around him. “It was suggested to me by another parent who saw the potential in me to be a success, and whose boy had a successful trial, so they knew the setup of it all,” Riley explained. That recommendation proved to be an important step in his journey.
Would he recommend UK Football Trials to other players? His answer is emphatic. “Yes — it’s a great way to be able to showcase yourself in front of multiple scouts at the levels expected of you to perform if you were to be offered a trial. I would do it all again if not successful in my trial with Oxford United, as it really gave me a lot of opportunities I had never had before.”
For now, Riley is focused on preparing for his Oxford United trial. With several clubs already showing serious interest, his story is proof of how opportunities can come when talent is matched with determination and the right platform. The next chapter of his football journey is just beginning, and with his ability, mindset, and work ethic, Riley Stevens is certainly one to watch for the future.
