Now Offered an Official Scholarship with Rotherham United 

Ashton’s football journey has continued to move in the right direction following his initial breakthrough with Rotherham United, marking another major milestone in his development. 

Ashton first attracted attention after attending a UK Football Trials event, where scouts from several professional clubs were present. Determined to make the most of the opportunity, Ashton delivered a strong performance that caught the attention of four professional clubs, all of whom invited him in for further trials. 

After attending several of these opportunities and weighing up his options, Ashton eventually joined Rotherham United for an initial six-week trial period. The club wanted to take a closer look at his ability, work ethic, and attitude within their academy environment. Ashton embraced the challenge, working hard in every session and demonstrating both his technical ability and commitment. 

His efforts paid off. 

Following the trial period, Rotherham United were impressed with Ashton’s performances and offered him a two-year contract, allowing him to continue his development within their academy setup. The environment proved to be both demanding and rewarding, pushing Ashton to improve every aspect of his game. 

Reflecting on his time at the club, Ashton described the experience as extremely positive. The organisation, coaching, and professionalism within the academy created a supportive environment where players were encouraged to grow and develop. 

Looking back at his journey, Ashton also recognises the role that UK Football Trials played in opening the door to these opportunities. When Oldham’s academy closed, he initially feared that his pathway into professional football might be limited. However, attending the trials gave him renewed belief. 

“UK Football Trials showed me how much opportunity was still out there and kept the dream alive,” he explained. 

The standard at the event was exactly what he expected — competitive and demanding — but also a platform where players could genuinely be noticed. 

“It’s a professional setup and genuinely offers real opportunities to get picked up by a pro club,” Ashton said, encouraging other aspiring players to take similar chances if they are serious about progressing in the game. 

Now, Ashton has taken another important step forward. 

After continuing to impress within the academy environment, Rotherham United have officially offered Ashton a scholarship, recognising both his progress and potential. Securing a scholarship represents a significant achievement and confirms the club’s belief in his development moving forward.
