Marcus – 13 Years Old – Centre Back | Scouted by West Ham United & Oxford United

At just 13 years old, Marcus is already establishing himself as a dominant defensive presence, earning recognition from West Ham United and Oxford United after impressing at UK Football Trials.

Marcus began his football journey at the age of nine, playing as a centre back in the Selkent League for his local grassroots team. From early on, his ability stood out. Strong in the tackle, composed under pressure, and confident on the ball, he quickly developed into a reliable and effective defender.

His early success came when his team won The Shield competition in Selkent, a moment that marked the beginning of his rapid progression. From there, Marcus stepped up into higher levels of football, competing in both the KYL (Kent Youth League) and the Junior Premier League (JPL).

This season, his development has been further highlighted by success with AFC Lewisham, where he played a key role in winning the JPL league — a strong achievement that reflects both his individual growth and his contribution to the team.

Marcus’ physical profile and playing style have been key factors in his progression. His height, strength, technical ability, and impressive passing range allow him to control games from the back, while his composure under pressure makes him a standout performer in defensive situations.

Looking to test himself at an even higher level, Marcus attended a UK Football Trials event in South London, where he had the opportunity to perform in front of academy scouts.

The experience proved to be a turning point.

Marcus impressed throughout the sessions and matches, showing not only his defensive qualities but also his confidence on the ball and ability to read the game. His performances caught the attention of scouts from both West Ham United and Oxford United, who contacted his family shortly after the event to begin the process of arranging trial opportunities.

One moment in particular stood out.

“Being asked to stay back and play with the older age group to showcase my skills further,” his mother explained. “He knew he was being noticed and that his hard work paid off that day.”

Playing up an age group is often a key indicator of a player’s level, and Marcus embraced the challenge — further demonstrating his maturity and ability to compete at a higher standard.

Reflecting on the experience, the impact went beyond just being scouted.

“The experience was extremely valuable for his football mentality and confidence,” his mother said. “He had fun playing with other boys in his age group and above.”

Marcus attended UK Football Trials with a clear goal:

“To take the next step and have the opportunity to play against academy scouts and experience a higher level of football.”

That goal has now been achieved, with trials on the horizon.

When asked if they would recommend the experience to other players, the response was clear:

“Yes. It’s a great professional environment, and if you believe in yourself, you will get scouted.” << Back to Success Stories Show Me Trial Dates >>
