Theo – 15 Years Old – Centre Back | Scouted by Bristol City & Bristol Rovers

At 15 years old, Theo is a centre back whose football background already includes years of grassroots, academy and school football. He started with Lliswerry Stars at U5/U6, played for Corries from U9 to U13 in central midfield and centre back, captained Saints at U14, and then moved into Dragons Football Academy at U15. He has also represented Newport School Districts at U15 and U16 level and is currently playing for Lliswerry AFC.

Theo attended UK Football Trials' Cardiff event looking to test himself in front of scouts and experience a professional trial environment. His parent described the day as positive from the moment the players arrived.

"Really good from start to finish. From introducing players to each other to the tasks and advice. Brilliant set-up! Nice to see a variety of clubs there too."

The coaching helped Theo settle into the day. Although he arrived feeling nervous, the environment allowed him to relax, enjoy the football and show more of himself as the trial progressed.

"Theo said he was made to feel really relaxed and had fun while trialling."

The drills and feedback stood out as much as the match itself. Theo came away understanding that, when an opportunity arrives, he has to trust his ability rather than hold back. For him, that meant being confident, showing aggression when the game demanded it and making sure scouts saw the full range of what he could offer.

That opportunity quickly became real. Both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers showed an interest, with Bristol City making direct contact by text and email. The scout involved, Dean, then took the time to find out when Theo was next playing, watched him again in a match and made it clear that he wanted to take the process further. A start date for a Bristol City trial followed.

Theo went into Bristol City's environment for two weeks. It was his first experience of that kind of club trial and, by his own family's account, the nerves affected how freely he played. He was eventually released from the trial without detailed club feedback, but the experience gave him a much clearer understanding of what is required when the next opportunity comes.

Rather than allowing the setback to stop him, Theo has used it as motivation. His parent explained that he felt he had held back because he was new to the environment and unsure how far he could impose himself on the game. Theo's response has been to learn from it and make sure he is more prepared next time.

"He said the knock-back has only made his comeback stronger."

The relationship with the scout has also continued beyond the Bristol City trial. Dean remained positive about Theo's potential and indicated that he did not want him to be forgotten, offering to reach out to other contacts where possible.

For Theo and his family, the experience has reinforced the value of putting yourself in the right environment and being ready when someone takes notice. When asked whether they would recommend UK Football Trials, the response was emphatic.

"Absolutely! The experience gives the kids confidence. It is so professional, everyone is nice and welcoming, and it is really well organised. Wish I brought him sooner."

Theo came to Cardiff to test himself. He left with interest from two professional clubs, a two-week trial at Bristol City and first-hand experience of what it takes to perform in a professional academy environment. The first trial did not end with a place, but the experience - and the support of a scout who still believes in his potential - has given him something concrete to build on.
