Lucas’ Success Story – From UKFT Trial to Walsall FC

Lucas attended a UK Football Trials event at Tamworth in April, where his performance caught the attention of UKFT scout Luke Astley.

Luke was impressed with Lucas and contacted both Cheltenham Town and Walsall FC, with both clubs showing an interest in offering him a trial. As Walsall was the more practical option for the family, Lucas accepted the opportunity to trial with the club.

The process took a little longer than expected due to the trial beginning towards the end of the season, but Lucas continued to impress. He completed four weeks of training with Walsall and was then selected to play for a mixed academy side featuring U13–U15 players, despite Lucas himself being U13.

After a strong performance in the game, Lucas was invited to arrive early for his next training session to meet with the club’s Head of Recruitment. The family were told how impressed Walsall had been with Lucas throughout both training and match situations.

Lucas then received the fantastic news that Walsall FC had signed him.

His parent said:

“I want to say a massive thank you to UK Football Trials, especially Luke Astley, who spotted Lucas’ talent and has kept in touch with me to follow how Lucas has been getting on.”

A brilliant achievement for Lucas and a great example of what can happen when a player takes their opportunity at a UK Football Trials event.
