Tottenham Academy Product Impressing on Trial with Colchester
A player who came through the Tottenham Hotspur academy is currently on a six-week-trial with Colchester United after impressing a scout at our event in May. One month in, we asked his Dad a few questions about the journey so far…
How is the trial with Colchester Going?
It’s going well, we went in and trained over the summer then they made a formal offer of a trial, so we signed up for six weeks with them about a month ago. He’s been in for a while now and has been enjoying it, he just loves playing football.
And has he got to play in any matches yet?
Yes, he’s actually played in about 10 games! Off the top of my head I can remember games against Cambridge, Stevenage, Ipswich, Watford and they beat Southampton, which was a great result.
How has Ronaldinho coped with the standard?
He is standing up to the level, he’s a very skilful player and different to what they’ve got currently. I think his time with Spurs has prepared him well.
Can you tell us a bit more about his time at Tottenham?
Ronaldinho was at Spurs between the ages of six and nine and got to experience some amazing coaching in his time there. He developed so much and it was so important for him to go through that. Unfortunately he was released just over a year ago, and that’s when we came to UK Football Trials.
And how does Colchester compare with Spurs?
Well obviously Tottenham was a different level in terms of being a top Premier League side, with more money and better facilities. But Colchester is a great opportunity for Ronaldinho, the competition wont be as great here, which should give him a better chance of progressing through the academy.
Finally, how was his UK Football Trials experience?
He was really happy with it; it was a good experience and something he enjoyed. We will see what happens with Colchester, he’s still got a couple of weeks left until a decision is made but if he doesn’t sign then we’ll definitely be back.
We also caught up with the Colchester scout who spotted Ronaldinho at our trial in Essex. He gave his thoughts on how the youngster is performing and revealed what he liked about him initially.
He said: “Ronaldinho is doing very well on his trial, scoring against some of the bigger clubs and we all hope he signs.
“What caught my eye at UK Football Trials was his exceptional body feints and movement. Nobody knows where he is going to go, he is unpredictable.”
