How to Improve at Football Over 20: Advice from UEFA Pro Coach Anthony Williams
Many players worry they’ve missed their chance if they’re not playing professionally by the age of 20. But according to Anthony Williams — UEFA Pro Licence coach and Director of Football at UK Football Trials — improvement is absolutely possible, no matter your age.
“While most pros start around 16 years of age, improvement is still possible after 20,” says Anthony. “It just takes the right mindset, regular training, and a clear development plan.”
So, what should you focus on if you want to get better at football over 20?
1.
Play Regularly in Competitive Matches
One of the best ways to sharpen your skills is through consistent game time. “Play in all forms of the game — 11v11, 5-a-side, futsal — everything helps,” Anthony explains. “Each format tests different aspects of your ability, and the more touches you get, the faster you develop.”
2.
Improve Your Fitness and Strength
Physical sharpness makes a huge difference. “Being aerobically fit and physically strong helps you stand out, especially in adult games where pace and strength are key,” says Anthony. Include strength training, sprints, agility work and recovery into your routine.
3.
Develop Your Game Intelligence
As players mature, the mental side of football becomes more important. “You’ve got to improve your decision-making, positioning, and communication,” says Anthony. “Study matches, watch players in your position, and learn how they move and manage the game.”
This kind of football IQ can help you close the gap on players who may have more experience.
