Mastering Tactical Ability: The Key to Football Intelligence

Tactical ability is essential for any football player. It involves both visual and positional awareness, along with football intelligence. Do you know how your team should shape up during different phases of play? More importantly, are you fully aware of your role within that shape, whether your team is in possession or defending? While specifics vary by position, understanding your role in the team at all times is vital.

Understanding Multiple Roles

Scouts are not just interested in how well you know your position. They also want to see if you understand the responsibilities of other positions. For instance, the roles of a full-back and a wing-back, or a central midfielder and a number ten, can be interchangeable depending on the situation. Formations can shift because of substitutions or tactical changes, and you might find yourself playing in an unfamiliar role. This happens frequently during trials when logistical constraints may prevent everyone from playing their preferred position.

Adapting to Tactical Changes

Rather than viewing these changes as unfair, use them as opportunities to showcase your tactical flexibility. Demonstrating that you can adapt and thrive in multiple positions is a critical aspect of tactical awareness. Take inspiration from players like Phil Foden at Manchester City, who seamlessly switches roles during a match. Scouts are particularly drawn to versatile players who can fit into different positions as needed.

Common Pitfalls in Tactical Understanding

During our overseas trips, we often meet players with excellent technical abilities, such as quick feet and solid ball control. However, many fall short in real match situations due to a lack of tactical understanding. Technical skill alone is not enough to impress scouts—tactical intelligence is equally important.

Improving Tactical Intelligence

To improve this area of your game, start by watching TV analyses and listening to what experts say. Take advice from experienced coaches and request feedback on your positional play. By focusing on improving your football intelligence, you’ll stand out at your next trial for not only your skills but also your tactical awareness.
