Ferdinand, who plays as a centre attacking midfielder or as a striker, has spent the last two weeks training with Barnsley u21's after a successful UK Football Trial in April.

His time with the academy included games against Sheffield United and Derby County, where he played against England International Darren Bent in a side managed by ex-pro Kevin Phillips.

James Price, the intermediary who represented Ferdinand during his trial, said: "He did well and they loved his attitude.

"Ferdinand is a real powerful and pacey striker who has european experience and really settled in well with the rest of the squad."

He added: "Unfortunately he wasn't kept on because he missed a few chances when he should have just been a bit more clinical, but the Head of Recruitment has provided a glowing reference and believes he is certainly a League 2 or Conference player - Barnsley are possibly going to be Championship next season if the playoffs go well."

Ferdinand is now working on his fitness over the Summer to stay in shape for pre-season, and will be attending a showcase UK Football Trial event in Essex next month.

He previously signed a six-month contract with FK Spartaks Jurmala, a team in the Latvian Higher League, falling just one round short of a glamour tie against Sampdoria.

"It was a great experience," he said, "Every second, every training session. The football is different, Europa League games are amazing and it's a different environment to playing in England. I was offered an extension to stay but I wanted to try to earn a contract in England or Germany and that's my goal now."
