Archer Has Trials for Derby County and Cheltenham Town

14-year-old forward Tom Archer has recently completed trials with Derby County and Cheltenham Town after being scouted from our event last year.

In August 2017, Tom attended our trial at Tamworth Football Club and three clubs took his details on the day; Sheffield United, Derby County and of course Cheltenham Town.

Tom’s dad, John, explained what happened next.

What happened after Tom’s UK Football Trial?

“Three or four clubs got in touch with us and told us they were interested and we went for a trial with Derby first of all, but it was an hour away and it was a bit too far for us really. Then Cheltenham invited Tom in for an initial six-week trial, but they decided to keep him on for a couple of extra weeks while they were making a decision.”

How was the trial at Cheltenham?

“It was fantastic, he thoroughly enjoyed the training and the time he spent there. He had a great time and learnt a lot, so he was made up with the opportunity.

How did he cope with the standard?

“He coped with the level well and was training three times a week with the other players, so he was used to it pretty quickly.”

Did Tom get to play in any academy matches?

“Yes, while he was on trial he got to play in games against Yeovil, Bristol City and twice against Swindon Town.”

What was the final decision from the club?

“There were three other players in his position already, so they told us that they couldn’t sign him in the end, but they obviously had a very long look at him and the whole experience was excellent.”

What did Tom make of his UK Football Trial?

“He love it, it was a actually a birthday present for him and we brought him down to Tamworth not really knowing what to expect, but it was really interesting and of course successful for us.”

What level has he been playing before this?

“Tom used to play for Stratford Town Academy, so he’s had some experience playing at a decent level before.”

Finally, have you got any advice for other players coming to UK Football Trials?

“Tom works very hard. On the day I’d say be busy and confident, it can be daunting but Tom really enjoyed it, so just go for it.”

Tom has booked into another UK Football Trial and will be at our event in Birmingham on February 19th, hoping to impress some more scouts and earn another pro club trial.
