Torquay United Sign Former Wolves & Liverpool Trialist
Torquay United have signed 14-year-old Callum Black following an impressive performance at our trials in October.
The promising centre-back was originally scouted by Wolves at another of our events earlier in the year, but returned to UK Football Trials after Callum’s travel time to the Premier League club’s academy exceeded FA guidelines.
Pete Johnson, Torquay United Head of Recruitment, spotted Callum at our trial and called to give us the news on Monday.
“We got Callum in on trial and he played in a couple of games for us and did well,” Pete revealed.
“The Head of Academy said they like him so we’re going to sign him. It’s really good news and everyone’s happy to get the deal done.”
While on trial for the National League South club, Callum scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, no doubt turning heads in the process.
Speaking after signing for the club, Callum’s dad, Fraser, said: “They told us after the second session that they wanted to sign him, so it all happened quite quickly.
“Obviously he was delighted, it’s a lot to take in but he’s very happy to sign for Torquay - it’s a good club with a very professional setup.”
Although he now plays at centre-back, Callum finished as top scorer for his local side last season while playing in midfield, and will have been be used to the trial process before joining Torquay, having had a short spell with Liverpool in 2016, as well as the Wolves trial earlier this season.
The UK Football Trials Team would like to congratulate Callum on signing for Torquay and wish him all the best for his future football career.
