The Importance of Crossing for a Winger

The Different Types of Crosses

A winger needs variety in their delivery to keep defenders and goalkeepers guessing. There are several types of crosses, each with its own purpose and technique.

1. The Whipped Cross (Outswinger)

This is a cross that bends away from goal, typically delivered by a right-footed player from the right or a left-footed player from the left. The curve makes it difficult for the goalkeeper to claim, while allowing the striker to attack the ball in stride. This is one of the most effective and dangerous crosses a winger can deliver.

2. The Inswinging Cross

This cross bends towards the goal, making it tricky for defenders and goalkeepers to judge. Often seen from set pieces or when a winger cuts inside, this delivery creates chaos in the box as players rush in to get a decisive touch.

3. The Low Driven Cross

A fast, low ball across the six-yard box is difficult to defend and ideal for strikers making near-post runs. Precision is key—if hit too hard, it can evade everyone, but when executed properly, it’s a nightmare for defenders to deal with.

4. The Bouncing Cross

Sending in a cross that bounces before reaching the goalkeeper adds an element of unpredictability. Keepers must judge the bounce, and any miscalculation can lead to fumbles and scrappy goalmouth finishes.

5. The Byline Cutback

One of the most effective crosses in modern football. Instead of crossing from wide areas, wingers now drive towards the byline and cut the ball back into the box, increasing accuracy and allowing attackers to strike from closer range.

The Key to Delivering a Great Cross

A cross isn’t just about swinging the ball into the box. The best wingers consider:

✔ Pace – A slow, floating cross is easy to defend, but a fast, whipped ball is much harder to clear.

✔ Depth – Too short, and the first defender clears it. Too long, and the ball runs out of play.

✔ Decision-making – Knowing when to cross early, take on a defender, or delay delivery is crucial.

✔ Repetition – Practising different types of crosses under game-like conditions improves consistency and precision.

How to Get Noticed at a Trial

Scouts want to see more than just speed—they’re looking for wingers who can deliver end product. Even a couple of high-quality crosses in a trial can make a player stand out. A winger who can consistently put dangerous balls into the box will always be in demand.

At UK Football Trials, we help players refine their crossing technique, ensuring they have the skills to impress scouts and take their game to the next level. If you’re serious about developing as a winger, make sure crossing is a strength—not a weakness.
